Specialist Diploma in Form & Function of the Human Body
What Type of Course is it?
This one-year, part-time Diploma course aims to develop specialist knowledge of the human body, disease states and possible interventions, and to develop transferable and soft skills.
Delivered via blended learning the course will equip participants with state-of-the-art reference materials to support module topics. Participants will gain knowledge of the form and function of the human body and of common human diseases, the science behind a range of therapeutic interventions and the technology behind various medical devices. A focused project module and the practical and applied nature of programme delivery will require participants to apply their knowledge to real cases and engage in discussions with fellow students and module tutors which explore the key concepts in the human body, disease states and various interventions.
How Will I Benefit?
The course is intended for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of the human body. It will allow those with engineering qualifications to specialise in biomedical aspects of engineering if taken as a ‘top up’ course.
If graduates so wish they can progress to the B.Sc. in Science & Technology Studies (NQF level 8) with credit for their studies. In this case they will be exempt from one elective stream in the Degree cycle.
Learning Objectives
On completion of the course students should have:
- Specialised knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, cell biology, immunology and disease states
- An appreciation of the science behind a range of therapeutic interventions
- Technical knowledge of biocompatibility and various medical devices
- Developed various transferable and soft skills
